New: a real Mac File menu in the system menu bar at the top of the screen, the way native Mac apps work. File → Exit replaces the old Exit button
Crash History moved to File → Crash History…, freeing up space in the button rows
New: if the app closed unexpectedly last time, a red banner now appears at the top of the window on the next launch, with View report and Dismiss. On a normal day you never see it. The File menu item reads “Crash History (1 new)” until the report has been opened
Dependency check now sits on its own at the right end of the third button row
Windows 11 & Linux: the same File menu, with Crash History and Exit, as a menu bar inside the window, pinned above the content so it stays put while you scroll. The crash banner works the same way
Windows 11: opening a second copy of the app no longer reports a false crash
Redesigned: the Director Workbench layout. Every effect is listed on the left with its “include in stacked render” checkbox, and the selected effect’s settings show on the right — no more scrolling through a long column of effect cards inside another scrolling window. The analysis controls, Scan and progress now share one row, and the Activity Log and Render Queue fold away, so the effects get most of the window. The list is also built to grow: many more effects can be added in future versions and stay easy to browse and pick from, with optional effect grouping planned next — so the Workbench stays easy to navigate even at 100 or 200 effects
New in VHS Fix: an AI strength slider. Mix the AI upscale with your original footage (for example 60% AI + 40% original) so the film keeps its own grain and texture and looks less synthetic
VHS Fix: the A/B compare sample now opens in its own player window, with Before and After side by side and real playback controls. While it builds you see its progress and can stop it, and when you like what you see, Looks good — Restore full video starts the full restore right from there
VHS Fix: a disk-space check before you start. A full-length AI restore needs a lot of temporary space, so the app now estimates how much, shows which drive it will use, and lets you pick a bigger drive — instead of running out of room an hour in. Temporary files are deleted automatically when the restore finishes or is cancelled, and leftovers from an interrupted run are cleaned up
VHS Fix: long videos are now restored in one-minute pieces, with cleanup, AI upscale and encoding all running at the same time. The graphics card stays busy instead of waiting between steps, and a full-length film needs a fraction of the temporary disk space it used to
VHS Fix: more reliable on long jobs. A piece that comes back from the AI upscale with damaged (black) frames is detected and redone automatically, a GPU crash on some NVIDIA cards is fixed, the time-remaining estimate now follows the current speed so it stays realistic, the progress window no longer freezes once the estimate passes one hour, and the last frame of the video is no longer dropped

New: Background Voices — finds the quiet conversation happening behind whatever a video is actually about (passengers on a tram, a crowd behind a street recording), lifts it out into its own listenable track, and can transcribe what it can make out. Sits next to VHS Fix. Runs entirely on your Mac
Background Voices: pick the spoken language up front, or leave it on Auto and it detects per section of the recording rather than guessing once for the whole file
Background Voices: added a Translate to option, separate from the spoken language — English comes straight from Whisper, any other language goes through an offline translation pass afterward
Background Voices: rebuilt the noise-vs-speech filtering after testing on real faint/overlapping audio — drops invented text, repeated-word loops, and stock “thanks for watching”-style phrases in dozens of languages, without also throwing out real quiet dialogue the way the first pass did
Background Voices: detection now also listens across the whole track, not just the spots a first pass flagged as likely speech — catches quiet talk a quick scan alone was missing
Fixed: Background Voices could fail to start on a fresh install (a worker process launched with the wrong environment)
Redesigned: the Transcribe (Whisper) dialog now opens on one plain question — just the subtitle file, or a copy of the video with soft or burned-in subtitles — with the language and model right below it. Backend, filters, presets, and subtitle styling are still all there, just under a Settings section instead of hidden
The Transcribe button doubles as a Cancel button while a transcription is running, the same way the download button does
Fixed: picking a translation language you didn’t already have downloaded used to lock you into waiting out the download with no way to back out — Cancel now works from the first second
Fixed: Crash History could report a session as crashed when it had simply been quit and replaced by a new build, or when a second copy of the app was still open — both are now recognized correctly, and a stale crash from days earlier is never shown again as if it just happened
Notarization: the release build now retries a failed upload instead of leaving a release stuck on a network hiccup

New: Synthetic Voice Dubbing — mutes the original speech and replaces it with a synthetic voice reading a translated .SRT, timed to the subtitles. Runs entirely on your Mac; no API key, account, or subscription, and nothing is uploaded
60 voices across 19 languages, including 20 English voices; models download once (63–79 MB) and are cached after that
Voice Preview plays about 5 seconds of any voice before you download the full model — it streams a small sample clip, not the whole thing
Dubbed lines are fit to their subtitle slot, capped at 1.6× speed — past that, speech stops being intelligible, so a line is allowed to run slightly long instead
Option to keep the original audio quietly underneath rather than replacing it outright
The app now detects what language a subtitle file is actually written in, preselects it, and warns you if the voice you picked speaks a different one — dubbing reads subtitles aloud, it does not translate them
When a dub finishes you can play the result immediately or open its folder in Finder
Fixed: subtitle cues containing nothing pronounceable (“...”, music symbols) were reported as failed segments instead of being skipped
Fixed: the dubbed video could come back shorter than the original when the last spoken line ended before the video did
Fixed: voice downloads and previews failed on some systems due to a missing certificate bundle in the packaged app
Windows 11: Synthetic Voice Dubbing now available there too, with the espeak data path handled through a directory junction rather than a symlink (symlinks need Developer Mode or admin on Windows) and RAM detection added for the low-memory warning. Linux followed the same day

Downloads can now find and grab the video directly from many pages yt-dlp previously rejected outright with "Unsupported URL" — it locates the video source in the page itself instead of giving up
Fixed a crash that could happen during those downloads
Added a Tor toggle to the Download URLs dialog, with an optional Region and Country to control the exit location — turn it on to route that download through Tor

Version 2.2 August 22, 2026 Mac Windows 11 Linux

Smarter handling of "Access forbidden (403)" download failures — the app now recognizes this is usually yt-dlp falling behind a site change and offers a one-click "Update yt-dlp" fix directly in the error dialog, instead of just reporting the failure
The bundled yt-dlp is now the nightly build instead of stable, for better day-to-day compatibility with site changes as they happen
"What's New" button renamed to "Changelog" and now points here

Added in-app auto-update: the app checks for new versions on its own and shows a dismissible banner when one's available
Download button in that banner works two ways — immediate download with a license key, or a fresh link emailed to you if you only have your purchase email
Fixed a bug where the update check could silently fail with a certificate-verification error in the compiled app, so it never found new versions at all
